Turning commercial performance into lasting genetic advantage

Saleyard prices get plenty of attention but the premium is usually built well before sale day. It comes from breeding decisions that lift fertility, growth, efficiency and eating quality over time, backed by objective measurement and consistent selection.

Launched on 1 March 2026, our Speckle Park Commercial Register (SPCR) gives members a practical way to record performance data on commercial steers and heifers and use those records to back sharper, more confident breeding decisions.

Commercial registers are now a familiar feature across the cattle sector, and we have developed the SPCR with a clear purpose: to strengthen the breed’s commercial foundations by improving the depth and quality of data coming from real production settings. The intent is to support better selection confidence on farm and build a stronger evidence base behind the breed over time.

“As margins in agriculture are continually squeezed, cattle producers need access to the best systems and data to make informed decisions, to help create opportunities to secure and improve markets. The framework around the SPCR allows us to build opportunities for the future.”

Tim Weller, SPI Vice Chairman

Five years in the making, the SPCR has been shaped through input from members and industry, including commercial producers, seedstock breeders and supply chain stakeholders. We have designed the register to operate under commercial conditions and withstand scrutiny, with clear rules that protect herd book integrity and keep the data reliable.

We have been clear about where the lines sit. The SPCR is not a seedstock register and it is not intended for breed up or stud registration. Those functions remain with the Speckle Park Purebred Register (SPPR). The SPCR is purpose-built for commercial cattle and records only steers and heifers, keeping it closely tied to commercial production while maintaining clear boundaries around the herd book.

For commercial producers, recording pays its way in the decisions that matter. It brings more certainty to joining direction, strengthens keep and cull calls and helps pinpoint the females that keep delivering year after year in the system they are run in. Buyer confidence is earned when outcomes repeat across seasons and markets and that reliability is built through selection decisions made one and two generations earlier.

At breed level, we are also linking the SPCR to a broader objective: strengthening the Speckle Park genomic reference population and improving EBV accuracy over time. With a significant number of Speckle Park and Speckle Park-influenced cattle working in commercial environments, more consistent recording across those herds helps build a clearer picture of performance across seasons, regions and management systems.

The register also reflects market demand for traceability and transparency. NLIS or EID details are required for animals entered into the SPCR, supporting stronger traceability and laying the groundwork for future linkage with carcase outcomes as opportunities develop. We are also exploring a verified ear tag system aligned with commercial market and processor requirements.

We have developed the SPCR around two core principles: preserving the integrity of the herdbook and ensuring accurate, reliable data collection. Those foundations are reflected in the rules and limitations that guide how the register can be used, with the aim of keeping it practical for members while credible for the broader industry.

Member webinar: get started with the SPCR

To help members get up to speed quickly, we are hosting a practical webinar covering how the SPCR works, key eligibility and DNA requirements, costs, how to submit data and how the register can support commercial marketing and traceability. If you can’t make it on the night, a recording will be made available to members.

More information about SPCR, webinar details and RSVP are available on the SPCR page (click here).
